If you are interested in checking out an item directly at a nearby Chittenden County library*, the directions below will help you find out which libraries own the item. In order to know whether the item is currently available, you’ll need to telephone the owning library or visit its website.

The easiest way to search for materials at other libraries is to contact your home library and let your Interlibrary Loan Specialist assist you. However, if you choose to do your own search, find an item that you are interested in borrowing, and the lending library is outside the Chittenden County area* or you do not plan to pick up the item yourself, you will still need to request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) through your home library.

How to Search the VT Department of Libraries Catalog (VALS):

1. Go to the Online Catalog advanced search page:
2. Select the the collections you wish to search:

   • Select individual libraries near you, if you are interested in going to that library to
check out the item directly. Only those libraries listed have online catalogs.

   • Select PUBCAT (The Public Library Catalog) to search the holdings at public
      libraries throughout the state.

   • Select DOLCAT (The Vermont Department of Libraries) to search the holdings at
      Vermont’s two regional libraries.

4. After entering your search terms, you will get a list of the collections or records
matching your search. In PUBCAT, to find out which library owns the book, look at
the Holdings code, and then search the Public Library Holdings Code list.
In DOLCAT, it will display which regional library holds the item.

For assistance with a loan from another library, Colchester residents may contact the Burnham Library at (802)879-7576. The Burnham Library Card can be used directly at 17 Homecard Chittenden County libraries.
