About the Library

Colchester has enjoyed public library service for over 100 years with changes along the way –the Kings Daughters Library, the Colchester Free Library, and finally – in 1942, thanks to funds left in Mrs. Etta Burnham’s will, the Burnham Memorial Library.  A large library addition was built in 1989. In May 2003, the library’s new bookmobile began year-round service throughout town.  The library is a department of the Town of Colchester.

The Burnham Memorial Library has a collection of over 47,000 items, including books, audiobooks, videotapes and DVDs, music on CD, and kits for day care centers. The library was fully automated in 1998, thanks to a successful fund-raising campaign conducted by the Friends of the Burnham Library. There are computers for public use, providing Internet access and word processing.  Currently the library has over 8400 registered patrons who borrowed over 100,000 items last year. The library employs 10 permanent staff members and maintains an active schedule of programs for children and adults.
